With Offshore Wind Port Groundbreaking, Supply Chain Will Allow NJ To Meet Its Clean, Renewable Energy Mandate

Lower Alloways Creek – Today, on the banks of the Delaware Bay Shore, Governor Phil Murphy with Senate President Steve Sweeney and the U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and a bevy of labor leaders broke ground for the New Jersey Wind Port, which will serve as a marshalling headquarters for the offshore wind supply chain. The industrial area, which is part of the PSEG Salem Nuclear Facility complex will be primarily constructed on site and will serve as a hub for the offshore wind turbines to be constructed off Atlantic City and the broader Jersey Shore.
Today’s groundbreaking comes on the heels of the December groundbreaking in Paulsboro for an offshore wind manufacturing facility run and is another concrete step in setting the stage for New Jersey to fulfill Governor Murphy’s ambitious mandate of 7,500 megawatts of offshore wind by 2035. The production of offshore wind will be a crucial strategy to achieve the state’s 50% Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) mandate by 2030.

“Offshore wind has been a promise for more than a decade in New Jersey. Eleven years after the passage of the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act and less than four years since Gov. Murphy committed New Jersey to be the national leader on offshore wind, the offshore wind supply chain is getting real across South Jersey. The future promise of offshore wind in New Jersey is arriving, and this is a win for our climate and clean, renewable energy.
This groundbreaking means New Jersey stays on track to construct steel turbines in the water by end of 2024 and create an entirely new industry that can power our state with clean, renewable energy. The latest U.N. climate report and the terrifying impact and wrath of Hurricane Ida are a reminder that climate change is on our doorstep. Today’s groundbreaking is a tangible sign that the promise of offshore wind off the Jersey Shore – and its gold mine of clean, renewable energy – is one step closer.”
