Asbury Park – Local elected officials and environmental advocates joined Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6) to tout new federal investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed late last year. Rep. Pallone, who serves as Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, recently announced that New Jersey will receive $15,448,790 to build out the state’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, paving the way for a more robust and convenient network of chargers across New Jersey. The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and will help boost domestic manufacturing, keep American automakers competitive in the global transition to electric vehicles, and fight the climate crisis by slashing greenhouse gas pollution.

The funding is part of the effort to construct the first-ever national network of EV chargers and will deploy chargers across both urban and rural areas. This funding comes from the Department of Transportation’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program (NEVI), which is being administered by the Federal Highway Administration.  The NEVI Program will provide nearly $5 billion over five years to help states create a network of EV charging stations along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors, particularly along the Interstate Highway System. The total amount available to states in Fiscal Year 2022 under the NEVI Formula Program is $615 million. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law included a total of $7.5 billion in grants for electric vehicle charging stations and alternative fuel infrastructure.

Environment New Jersey Director Doug O’Malley issued the following statement:

“To electrify our transportation sector, we need to create a charging infrastructure network for electric vehicle drivers that can end range anxiety and make EV charging as omnipresent as gas stations. Electric vehicles are here but we need more places to charge them. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law delivered with a down payment to build this network so we can tackle our largest source of climate emissions – the cars and trucks we drive. Thank you to Rep. Pallone for championing these EV investments and for fighting for historic climate investment legislation in Washington – more place to plug in at Asbury Park and across the state means more ways we can fight climate change.”
